Repeat outdoor enthusiasts , Ruth and Joe from PA fished with BOW’D UP again last Monday. The pressure was on this time, since Ruth caught that monster 40lb black grouper last year. They decided they wanted to try a different kind of fishing this time around, so we rigged up a kite line and set out for king fish. The bite was on that day! Along with the 40lb king fish in the picture below, they also caught yellow tail snapper, dolphin, bonita, barracuda, and a shark! We all had an amazing day of fishing, and I look forward to fishing with Ruth and Joe again.

A little update…

Thankfully we charter captains have been blessed this summer, and what is typically considered slow season for us was really booming compared to the years past. Key West, seems to be the vacation spot for all these days. Besides all the great fishing going on, and the unusual swarm of late summer visitors, I have even more excitement going on….my wife and I are expecting our first baby October 10th! I couldn’t be happier, and am so excited to for the arrival of my little fishing buddy.

So, I’d like to share a little bit about my recent charter I had out at Little Palm Island. Its not everyday that I am asked to do such a special charter, I was taken by surprise. I was asked by some very special people from Houston, TX if I would be available for two days of fishing, and if I could dock my boat up at Little Palm for the weekend?! I thought man this is going to be fun! BOW’D UP set the course east towards a small island off Little Torch Key; if you haven’t heard Little Palm Island you should check it out. It is a perfect hideaway, combined with a swanky atmosphere. My dad Big Harry(my mate for the weekend) and I arrived just in time to cook some burgers on the grill and watch the sunset.

The next morning we started our day at Looe Key Reef snorkeling, then did some lobstering! The Yellow Tail bite has been excellent this summer, so we went to a spot on the reef to do some yellow-tailing. Not long after, we anchored up and put the chum bag in the school of fish…they came right to the back of the boat ready to eat.

On the second day they had so much fun yellow-tailing that’s all they wanted to do; we also had a bonus shark, Bonito,Jacks, and Cero Mackerel. Over all the two days fishing out of Little Palm Island was a great experience, and I was reminded of why i love my job as a charter captain.

If your interested in booking…the fall fishing season is a blast! Wahoo, Sailfish, Tuna, King Mackerel, and Black grouper!

The trip started at 1 pm and was a half day, departing from Key West Florida’s very own Key West Harbour Yacht clubs. It was a breezy afternoon with the winds around 10 to 15 mph from the East, high around 85. The plan is to go south past the reef and set up on the edge of a color change(this means when the waters and current from the gulf stream meets with our local tides it forms a current rip). We use live baits like thread fin or goggle eye fished from a kite and at a drift. We had numerous fish around the boat including tuna and sailfish. landed 1 for 2 on sails, and one black fintuna! Give us a call and book your next fishing trip! (305)797-6046 Capt. Harry

We departed the Key West Harbour Yacht Club at 8am headed south out to the reef line. It was there where we started fishing. Draging a spread of natural an artificial baits we set our course west. As we troll our baits get slammed by tons of bonito and chicken sized dolphin. A few hours later we find ourselves 40 miles west of Key West, were few charter boats venture this far. We decide to find a spot to anchor up, to try our luck bottom fishing. Shortly after the chum is in the water appears a large school of large yellow tails. The bite is on as bait after bait is inhaled by the 2 to 3 lbs. hungry ”tails” the guys had there limit of 50 fish by night fall. Also caught was 3 nice 10 to 15 pound Red grouper, and 2 health 20 pound black groupers. All of the grouper were released grouper season opens back up on May 1.

The next morning we had breakfast and fished some more then began trolling our way back to key west. The guys picked up a couple more bonito and a big black fin tuna to top the trip. All in all it was a fun and memorable trip I wont forget. Thanks again to Tommy, Luke, and Tyler looking foward to fishing with you again.

OK I’m new to this whole wold of blogging, but thought I should start sharing some of my Key West fishing experiences, so here it goes…

I recently sat next to a nice couple from Iowa on my flight back from a lengthy and tiresome Vegas vacation Sunday afternoon. During our conversation, I had brought up that I was a Key West native, which in return sparked a chain of questions about vacationing in the Keys. The enthusiastic couple then proceeded to ask questions about my favorite topic…FISHING. That’s when I began to tell them all about BOW’D UP Charters, and my recent catches. By the end of the plane ride they decided they wanted to see for themselves what I had been describing to them for the past two hours. They both eagerly asked if I would be available for a half day charter Wednesday…I was stoked! At the baggage claim we exchanged phone numbers and they said they would be calling me Monday morning.

After picking my customers up at the Blue Marlin Motel bright and early Wednesday morning, we headed for BOW’D UP at the Key West Harbor Yacht Club. After loading up, we set our barrings due south of Eastern Sanbo(the reef), where we dropped our hooks and chummed for bottom fish. The bite was pretty slow, except for our one nice Yellowtail Snapper. We decided at that point to try our luck trolling offshore.

While trolling offshore we had a couple of instant hits. On our way in from trolling we stopped at a couple of wrecks to drop some Pinfish to the bottom, where we snagged our selves one feisty Mutton and a Porgy. As Mr. Jerry was reeling in the Porgy a 100lb Black Tip snuck up out of no where and devoured it! That sight alone made their day worth while.

After our half day came to an end, we headed back to the dock. On our way in, we witnessed a pod of dolphins, three giant tortoises, and a Portuguese Manowar. All in all the day was a success and my new friends from Iowa left with a great story to tell.
